If you have ever fought with the outer fulcrum seals on a Jaguar IRS then you will really appreciate this clever upgrade.
When rebuilding an IRS you have to pay careful attention to the fulcrum bearings. After setting the preload on the outer fulcrum bearings you have to fit the rear upright to the wishbone and this is where the fun begins – You have to install the outer felt seals and then compress them inside the wishbone whilst trying to measure the endfloat with a feeler gauge so you can shim the bearings. You then have to get the shims past the seal to allow you to tighten up the fulcrum shaft. Easy if you have three arms, the patience of a saint and an endless supply of cloths to wipe away the spilling grease. Not so easy for us lesser mortals.
With our modern SKF lip seals you no longer need to fight the old grease soaked felt seals. Simply pack the outer fulcrum bearings with grease, gently tap the seals into the original location, measure the endfloat and insert the required shims. No fight, no mess and no need for that third arm. Better still, these seals don’t leak and will last so much longer than the originals.
Not only are these seals easier to use and more durable but they are also cheaper than the original seals and retainers. Suitable for all IRS models. Why has this taken so long?
